Welding steel pipe technology breakthrough, market competitiveness continues to enhance
Welded steel pipes, as an important subcategory in the steel pipe industry, have made numerous technological breakthroughs in welding technology and quality control in recent years. The performance of the products is gradually closing the gap with seamless steel pipes, achieving alternative applications in multiple fields, and significantly improving market competitiveness.
Welded steel pipes, a significant sub-category in the steel pipe industry, have seen numerous technological breakthroughs in welding techniques and quality control in recent years. Product performance is gradually closing the gap with seamless steel pipes, enabling substitution in various fields and significantly enhancing market competitiveness.
Modern welded steel pipes are characterized by their welding quality and dimensional accuracy. Straight seam submerged arc welded pipes utilize a double-wire submerged arc welding process, with weld penetration exceeding 90% of the pipe wall thickness. Tensile strength is consistent with the base material, capable of withstanding the same working pressure as seamless pipes. Spiral welded pipes, through CNC forming technology, control pitch error within ±1mm, with pipe roundness deviation ≤0.5%, ensuring sealing for butt-joint installation. High-frequency straight seam welded pipes employ solid-state welding technology, with a heat-affected zone width less than 1mm, avoiding grain coarsening that would lead to performance degradation.
Compared to seamless steel pipes, welded steel pipes offer advantages in production efficiency and cost control. The daily output of a single straight seam welded pipe unit can reach 500 tons, more than three times that of seamless pipes, quickly meeting the mass demand of large-scale projects. By eliminating complex processes such as piercing and cold drawing, the production cost of welded steel pipes is reduced by 20%-30%, making them more cost-effective in large-diameter, low-pressure applications. Furthermore, welded steel pipes offer greater flexibility in specifications, allowing for customized length and diameter according to project needs, reducing on-site cutting and processing workload.
Application areas are continuously expanding. In urban natural gas low-pressure networks, spiral welded pipes with diameters of 200-500mm have become the mainstream choice, and their 3PE anti-corrosion layer ensures a service life of over 20 years. In steel structure buildings, welded rectangular pipes are used for frame columns, forming a closed section through continuous welding, increasing compressive load-bearing capacity by 40% compared to open-section steel. In agricultural irrigation, thin-walled welded steel pipes are used for water distribution branches; they are lightweight, easy to install, and have better resistance to pesticide corrosion than plastic pipes.
Industry data shows that in 2024, domestic welded steel pipe production accounted for 65% of total steel pipe production, with over 50% used in municipal and construction sectors. With the further maturation of welding technology, the substitution potential of welded steel pipes is expected to continue expanding in the future in areas such as small and medium-diameter oil and gas pipelines and low-pressure fluid transportation.
