The steel pipe industry is promoting the development of a circular economy

Guided by the "dual carbon" goals, the steel pipe industry actively implements the concept of green development, promoting energy saving, emission reduction, and resource recycling throughout the entire chain, from raw material selection and production processes to product recycling. The green manufacturing system is gradually improving, injecting new impetus into the sustainable development of the industry.
The characteristics of green steel pipe products are embodied in their low-carbon and recyclable nature. Many companies use short-process electric arc furnace steelmaking technology to produce steel pipes, using scrap steel as the main raw material, reducing carbon emissions by more than 60% compared to the traditional long-process technology. Product design emphasizes lightweight materials; by optimizing the cross-sectional structure, the amount of steel used is reduced while ensuring strength. For example, high-pressure boiler pipes use thin-walled designs, saving 15% steel per ton of product. In addition, the recyclable nature of steel pipes allows for 100% re-smelting after their service life, reducing the generation of solid waste.
Environmental advantages are significant in the production process. Steel pipe companies have promoted ultra-low emission technologies to achieve efficient treatment of waste gas, wastewater, and solid waste. Waste gas treatment uses activated carbon adsorption + catalytic combustion technology, with a volatile organic compound (VOC) removal rate of over 95%; wastewater is reused at a rate exceeding 80% after deep treatment, reducing fresh water consumption; and solid waste such as iron oxide scale generated from rolling is used as a raw material for iron oxide red production, achieving resource utilization. At the same time, the application of intelligent production systems can optimize energy consumption. For example, heating furnaces use intelligent temperature control technology, reducing gas consumption by more than 10%.
In the application end, green steel pipes help downstream industries reduce emissions. In the construction field, using high-strength steel pipes instead of traditional steel materials can reduce material usage by 30%, lowering the carbon emissions of the building's entire life cycle. The steel structure support of new energy vehicle charging piles uses weathering steel, eliminating the need for coating and reducing pollution from paint volatilization, while extending the service life to more than 20 years. Irrigation steel pipes in agriculture can be reused repeatedly, reducing white pollution compared to plastic water pipes and meeting the requirements of green agricultural development.
Industry association data shows that in 2024, the output of green steel pipes in China has reached 35%, an increase of 15 percentage points compared to 2020. Many companies have passed green factory certification, forming a complete industrial chain from green design and green production to green recycling. In the future, with the promotion of policies such as carbon footprint accounting and green procurement, the green transformation of the steel pipe industry will further accelerate, providing strong support for the development of a circular economy.
